February 23, 2007 Every dog has its day, especially in Barrington By Kerry Lester Anyone who has lost a pet knows it's like losing a member of their family. So, to celebrate the lives of our furry pals, pet boutique Cody and Carl's Blvd. in Barrington will host "Dogs are Family Too Day" from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Canines, children and adults are invited to join in the family affair. Festivities include a children's book signing, an opportunity to strut and shop with your mutt, meet new canine friends, and free dog and people treats. Children's author Teri Bennett will be signing copies of her book "Angel Dog Austin", a heartwarming story about the life and loss of her family sheepdog. The book was developed after writing a heartfelt holiday letter to family and friends after the dog's death. The illustrated tale is designed to help children and families cope with the loss of a pet. "It's really a cute way to introduce kids to the cycle of a dog's life, explaining the difference in how dogs and people age, and about 'doggy heaven,'æ" boutique owner Jennifer Schoonmaker said. A special section in the back of the book can be used as a memorial for the reader's "angel" pets. "This works for all types of loving pet owners, not just those who have dogs," she said. This is the only Chicago-area signing that Bennett, a Minnesota native, will be doing. "We're really excited to have her here," Schoonmaker said. "This is the first signing we've had since the boutique opened last year." "Dogs are Family Too Day" refreshments include chicken strips and bottled water for the dogs, and wine and sweets for the people. "(The chicken strips) look pretty good, but we thought we'd have some more choices for the people," she joked. Cody and Carl's Blvd., at 756 Northwest Hwy., Barrington, features designer canine and feline clothes and collars, a natural bakery, spa section and portrait studio. For information, call (847)
